I've been really enjoying what Marvel Comics is doing recently with their cosmic characters starting in '06 with the Annihilation mini series. Since then I've enjoyed it's sequel series and all of its spin-offs.
I think Nova has become one of my favorite current titles and I really liked Quasar (a.k.a. Wendell Vaughn) before he heroically and sadly gave his life trying to stop Annihilus. At least the mantle of Quasar still lives on in the very cool Phyla-Vell, who happens to be a lesbian! Yay! For me it's is always appreciated when gay characters are given prominent roles in mainstream comics... If only they hadn't killed off Wendell to do it!
Anyway, now that I've read the newer stuff, I naturally craved more! So I looked in the back issue section of my local comic shop and dug up the original Quasar comics from the early 90's. I instantly fell in love!( I guess I have a thing for humble, cute blondes with phenomenal cosmic powers!!!)
I was very drawn to this particular costume, which I discovered was his third costume during his series. So, after inspiration struck, I decided to draw him for the first time and had a blast! I sketched this rendering based somewhat on the cover to issue #32 because I liked the pose.
Instead of inking it, I scanned the pencil sketch and darkened it in Photoshop. I really liked the loose look it had! Next I colored it using a Wacom tablet which I had never really tried before. I had so much fun!!! It was a big departure for me from the way I usually work, which is so careful and controlled. I was very excited with the final result!
So here it is, I hope you like it! And I hope to do similar images in the future if time permits!
Great work! I really enjoy the Quasar series written by Mark Gruenwald with excellent philosophycal and methaphysical concepts. Phyla don't interest me as character, i prefering wendell.
